CPIM Review Series

This is a brief outline of the content of each of the five review courses associated with the CPIM program. Sessions are 3 hours

BASICS OF SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT (11 weeks)

This is an introductory course for production and inventory management personnel and CPIM candidates. This course provides the basic definitions and concepts for planning and controlling the flow of materials into, through, and out of an organization. It explains fundamental relationships among the activities that occur in the supply chain from suppliers to customers. In addition, the course addresses types of manufacturing systems, forecasting, master planning, material requirements planning, capacity management, production activity control, purchasing, inventory management, distribution, quality management, and Just-in-Time manufacturing.

Business Concepts: elements of the supply chain; operating environments; financial fundamentals;

MRP II (Manufacturing Resource Planning) and JIT (Just In Time)

TQM (Total Quality Management) and relationships among MRP II, JIT & TQM

Demand Planning: marketplace-driven; customer expectations, and definition of value

Customer relationships and demand management

Transformation of demand into supply: design and capacity management;

Planning and execution & control

Performance Measurements

Supply: Inventory and Purchasing

 Physical distribution system

MASTER PLANNING OF RESOURCES (9 weeks)
Master Planning of Resources focuses on developing and validating a plan of supply, relating management of demand to environment and developing and validating the master schedule. In addition, it encompasses transforming sales, marketing and business concepts for requirements into a feasible and economic operations plan in various business environments. It also addresses concepts and methodologies for managing projected and actual demands form distribution networks and external customers. Lastly, the course present methods for integrating sales and operation plans demand forecasts and customer demand into a specific master schedule. There are 3 key areas

   1. Developing and validating a sales plans
   2. Identifying and accessing internal & external demand & forecasting requirements
    3. Effecting an achievable master schedule consistent with business policies, objectives & resource constraints

DETAILED SCHEDULING AND PLANNING (10 weeks)
This course focuses on material and capacity scheduling and planning. It includes a detailed explanation of material requirements planning (MRP), a technique suitable for use in job shops. The course also introduces another material planning technique, material-dominated scheduling, which is applicable to process industries and other mature production environments. The course explains capacity requirements planning in detail and introduces other capacity-planning techniques, including processor-dominated scheduling.

Planning material requirements for the master schedule; inventory techniques

 Information used in material planning; characteristics of the detailed material planning process

 Mechanics of the material planning process

Maintaining the validity of the material plan; interaction with other systems (closing the loop);

Planning operations to support the priority plan: detailed capacity planning

Process Information used in capacity planning; desirable characteristics of capacity planning

Uses of the capacity plan; measuring the performance of the capacity plan

Interactions with other systems

Planning procurement and external sources of supply; relationships with suppliers

Techniques for supplier partnerships; implementing the new relationship

EXECUTION AND CONTROL OF OPERATIONS (10 weeks)
Execution & Control of Operations explains techniques for scheduling and controlling production and process operations. It also addresses the execution of quality initiatives and continuous improvement plans as well as and control of the control and handling of inventories. Lastly, the ECO presents techniques for evaluating performance and collecting data for effective feedback. the 3 key areas are:

  1. Prioritizing and sequencing work
  2. Executing work plans, implementing controls and reporting activity results
  3. Evaluating and providing feedback on performance

STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT OF RESOURCES (10 weeks)
In this course, students explore the relationship of existing and emerging processes and technologies to manufacturing strategy and supply-chain-related functions. The course addresses three main topics: aligning resources with the strategic plan, configuring and integrating operating processes to support the strategic plan, and implementing change. For maximum comprehension of course content, students should be familiar with the information and concepts presented in other CPIM modules before taking this course. This is the 'capstone' course for the CPIM Certification Series. Key areas include:

Strategic Planning Process

Competitive Market Issues

Choices affecting facilities, supply chain, information technology, and organizational design

Configuring and integrating internal processes

Evaluating and managing projects.
